BIG IDEA: Meritocracy Is A Myth

#MeritocracyMyth

In this series we will examine two key concepts: mythology and meritocracy.

Mythologies are those narratives and ideals that shape and define cultures.

One of America’s most deeply-embedded myths is meritocracy—otherwise known as the American Dream. It’s the idea that everyone can make it in America, all they need is vision and a strong work ethic. Everyone has the ability to improve their lives, they just need to earn it. (The flip-side of the American meritocracy myth: If someone fails to succeed in America, it’s their own fault.)

But what if this deeply-held ideal just isn’t true? And what does all of this have to do with racial justice?

That’s what we’ll be talking about next.
