BIG IDEA: Cultural Appropriation Is Never Appropriate

#AppropriationNotAppropriatePink2.0

In this series we’ll examine the concept of cultural appropriation.

In a strict sense, cultural appropriation is simply “the adoption or use of elements of one culture by members of a different culture.” (Wikipedia)

However what we’re talking about here (and the more commonly applied usage of the term) is the misappropriation of elements of a minority culture by a dominant culture.

Discussion around cultural appropriation has become more prominent in white mainstream media lately, as several big-name pop stars have been debating the topic in public forums. (Most recently and publicly: Nicki Minaj and Miley Cyrus.)

In this series we’ll watch some great videos and learn things like, What are the distinctions between cultural appreciation or cultural exchange, and cultural appropriation?

But I make no promises about being able to explain Iggy Azalea.
